This woman is a master weaver and one of the 8 original Grandmothers recruited by Mr. Morimoto to teach traditional weaving
Many women are employed and paid a fair wage through the sale of their textiles Chopping bark from mahogany trees sustainably grown in the forest for source of red-brown color Chopping lac, the secretions of certain insects to make red color
Due to loss of habitat lac insects cannot survive in Cambodia and must be imported from Laos The men make all of the looms, the homes, and anything that is needed for the project This woman is a master weaver and one of the 8 original Grandmothers recruited by Mr. Morimoto to teach traditional weaving
She is binding fiber tightly around the threads before dyeing so they will resist taking the color Measuring out the silk threads before setting up the loom The pattern is carefully worked out, tied and dyed onto the threads before they are woven
While in training the students learn every step involved in the process warp threads on the loom for a long textile "Iron soup" made by fermenting limes and rusty iron scarps, used as a mordant for natural dye colors
